Crack!

by Kristian

That was the sound of my broken leg, a fast move that caused a lot of pain. I was screaming and crying, wondering what just happened. I was taken out to the sideline; my mom was calling my dad to tell him that he would have to take me to the emergency room. It took my dad about 20 minutes to drive over to the soccer field, but it felt like hours to me. The pain was killing me.

When I got to the emergency room it took a while before I got helped. They took x-rays with a big steel board on the side of my leg. They had troubles finding balance for the board and it kept on falling on my hurting leg. It turned out that I had a spiral fracture, which is really bad and for the following three hours: the doctors tried to decide whether I needed a surgery or just a cast.

Fortunately, I didn’t need surgery and they started to wrap my leg with fiberglass. When I came out into the hallway, I had a big, full leg cast on. Surprisingly the cast was very light, but clumsy. Going from being a very active kid, I could now for the first time experience the life of a lazy, American kid. I got a new computer, which was pretty awesome, and for the next two weeks I was spending all my waking time playing on the computer. Those two weeks were the best ever and I wished the whole rehab time could have been like that. But unfortunately, I had to start to do real rehab in the beginning of the third week.

This meant physical therapist appointments twice a week and rehab exercises in the gym every day. The rehab was boring and I had to do it for two months. But after those two months, I got my cast of. That was a big relief. After two months in a cast, my leg was as small as a twig; but at least I got the cast off. Even if I got my cast off, I had a lot of rehab and physical therapist appointments left.

One day, my physical therapist told me that I could start to do Nordic skiing for rehab. I was sad that I couldn’t alpine ski, but happy that I at least could do some kind of skiing. I realized pretty soon that I would not be able to compete with the alpine team this winter, but that didn’t bother me too much; I joined the Nordic team instead. After a couple of weeks of Nordic skiing, I had become a solid Nordic skier and on the Sun Valley Nordic Team award in the end of the season I got the award for being the most outstanding boy on the prep team. All the rehab training helped my leg heal fast and I have already started to play soccer again.

Kristian-
Nice story! Though I really liked it and thought it was well written and very descriptive, it must have hurt and totally sucked to break your leg. I liked how the title and how it was used in the first sentence. Nice job, and keep it up.

What is up! I really liked the title of your story, when I first looked at it I was like What? Then when I started reading it it was awsome!

Olivia (unauthenticated)May 24, 2010 3:18 PM

Hi Kristian,
Nice story! I really liked it. You went straight to the point and I really liked the last paragraph. I never knew that you started Nordic skiing because of your broken leg. One thing I think you could add is how you broke your leg. The beginning paragraph was a little unclear and I never really understood how you broke your leg. Keep up the good work, Kristian!

Ouch! your discription at the first paragraph made me wince. It had only fairly big discription, but it still was a little too much for me.

Wow! Amazing story. I was kind of grossed out at the beginning because of Crack! that was the sound of my broken leg. Other that it was a pretty amazing story. If I was on the computer for two weeks I would get bored. It's cool that you got a new computer.

Hope Perkins (unauthenticated)May 24, 2010 7:53 PM

Kristian,
Great story. That must of been a bummer when you broke your leg. I wish you would've added more detail.

Yes crack is exactly how i would describe the sound of your leg breaking. when you had to do rehab did it hurt your leg at first. That is a bummer that you had to do all of those exercises. at least you were able to ski.

jackie (unauthenticated)May 25, 2010 2:11 PM

I remember when you broke your leg, I was there and it looked painful. I also saw you every thursday when you did therapy at Zenergy.

Hannah (unauthenticated)May 26, 2010 2:11 PM

Kristian,

Your story was very descriptive. I have never broken anything and not been able to move around. It sounds really painful to break your leg and to have it take so long to get better. It is cool about your new computer. So, I really liked your story. Great Job!
Hannah

Ow! Spiral factures are bad... My mom had one when she was 7... AnywAy, that would would be so bad.
That was kinda gross how you could hear the crack, all I heard when I broke my arm was crunching snow and my helmet scraping the net.

lukas dewolfe (unauthenticated)May 27, 2010 8:49 PM

ouch! that must of hurt a lot. I have broken my leg skiing because I crashed in to a tree. That was scary that you could hear the crack of your bone. I like how you said "now I will have the life of a reguler american kid. great job!

Lukas "other wise known as your brother"

Eliza (unauthenticated)May 28, 2010 11:38 AM
