    State Cross-Country

I had the honor of joining the Community School Cross-Country teams at the State Championship Meet last Saturday in Soda Springs. For the first time in recent memory the Cutthroats brought a full busload of runners and they did not disappoint. The girls team, led by Annie Pokorny's 4th place finish, won the 1A State title and the boys team, led by Max Christman's 19th place finish, finished a respectable 4th.

However, while the results are great, it was the team itself that was truly extraordinary. You see, at the Community School, our athletic teams are actually microcosms of the entire student community. It is not unusual at our school for kids who are National Championship athletes to run side by side with National Merit Scholars. Indeed, with this team, that is exactly what happened!

What I love so much about the Community School is that everyone belongs. Everyone understands what it means to be a part of the whole and everyone participates actively and enthusiastically with no ego, arrogance, or sense of superiority. In fact, the Cutthroat Cross-Country team, in particular, is known for their humility and the results, of course, speak for themselves.

On a chilly Saturday in October, this group of twelve intrepid runners made one Headmaster particularly proud.
